Material and sample terms

An analyte is the component being measured. A sample is the portion presented for analysis. An aliquot is a measured portion taken from a larger quantity, while a batch identifies material produced or grouped under defined conditions.

Analytical terms

Identity addresses what a material is; purity addresses the relative presence of components under a stated method; content addresses how much is present; and a chromatogram is the recorded detector response from a chromatographic separation.

Quality and record terms

A specification defines requirements, a certificate reports results, traceability connects a value or item to documented references, and uncertainty describes quantified doubt associated with a measurement result.
