Chain of Custody for Laboratory Research Materials

How receiving, transfers, storage, sampling, testing, and disposition records preserve traceability.

Laboratory scene illustrating Chain of Custody for Laboratory Research Materials

Educational scope: Laboratory documentation, analytical methods, and research recordkeeping only.

Begin at receipt

Record the shipment, supplier, received date, product, batch, container count, condition, documentation, and person accepting custody. Assign a unique internal identifier when the laboratory procedure requires one.

Document every transfer

Storage movements, sample withdrawals, preparation events, transfers between personnel or facilities, and testing submissions should retain the product and batch connection.

Close the record

Final use, return, destruction, or other disposition should be documented with date, quantity, responsible person, and any supporting record. Reconciliation helps explain the full material history.
