Measuring mass-to-charge
Mass spectrometry detects ions according to their mass-to-charge ratio. Peptides can appear in multiple charge states, so analysts interpret the observed pattern to estimate or confirm molecular mass.
Expected and observed values
Reports commonly compare an expected molecular value with an observed result. Agreement within the method's stated tolerance supports identity, while interpretation still depends on calibration, sample preparation, and instrument conditions.
A complementary result
Mass evidence and chromatographic evidence address different analytical questions. Reviewing both can provide a more complete record than treating either result as a stand-alone conclusion.
